Acoustic Design For Multi-Purpose Sports Arenas

Understanding the challenges and collaborative potential of stadium sound experiences for sports, concerts, and live events

Designing a multi-purpose arena means treating the space not just as a building – but as an instrument. This webinar explores how acoustics can be fully integrated into arena design to support sports, concerts, and large-scale events.

Agenda

The Arena Is An Instrument

Klaus Toustrup explores the core challenge of designing multi-purpose arenas: how to treat the entire space as a finely tuned instrument rather than simply a large volume to control. Through selected case examples, including the transformation of the Globen (Avicii Arena) from an ice hockey arena with hard acoustics into a flexible multi-purpose arena with a new roof structure, he will discuss:

  • How architectural form shapes acoustic behavior

  • Why acoustics must be integrated from the beginning, not added as an afterthought

  • Strategies for transforming single-purpose venues into high-performance multi-use spaces

The Consultancy Process

Dirk Noy presents the acoustic consultant’s viewpoint focusing on:

  • Achieving speech intelligibility in large and complex spaces

  • Balancing clarity for sports announcements, concerts, and public events

  • The acoustic design process — from concept to realization

This session bridges design ambition with technical execution.

Specifications, Paramters and Performance

Dominika Obwarzanek dives into the technical framework behind successful arena acoustics covering:

  • Defining and structuring acoustic specifications

  • Identifying and outlining key performance parameters

  • Ensuring precise fulfillment of requirements

  • Managing background noise and environmental considerations

She will also address the broader urban role of stadiums — as city generators that must create intimacy inside the venue while preventing noise outside.
