Thomas Lunner Director, Augmented Hearing at Reality Labs Research at Meta

Dr. Lunner has more than 30 years of experience spanning hearing technology, audio, cognition and human–machine interaction.

In 1995, together with Oticon, he presented the DigiFocus, the world’s first hearing aid based on digital signal processing. His work on low-power digital filter banks became fundamental to several generations of hearing aids, used by millions worldwide, and contributed to two EU IST Grand Prizes.

Dr. Lunner subsequently pioneered Cognitive Hearing Science, demonstrating the importance of cognitive ability and working memory for speech understanding in challenging listening environments and for optimizing hearing-aid signal processing.

He has authored 200+ scientific publications, with approximately 12,000 citations (H-index 54), holds 40+ patents, and has reviewed research for leading journals and international funding agencies. He has also led 40 employees at Eriksholm Research Centre and built extensive collaborations with leading research groups across Europe, North America and Australia.

His contributions have been recognized with, among others, Linköping University Alumnus of the Year (2016) and the William Demant Fellowship (2017) for his role in shaping the future of audiology.

Stefania Serafin Section Head of the Computer Science Section at DTU – Technical University of Denmark

Section Head at the Technical University of Denmark and affiliated researcher at Copenhagen Hearing and Balance Center, Rigshospitalet. Until November 2025 she was Professor at Aalborg University in Copenhagen leading the Multisensory Experience Lab (www.melcph.create.aau.dk).
Before moving to Denmark in 2003, she received a PhD from Stanford University in Computer Based Music Theory and Acoustics.

Eirini Liapikou Senior Audio & Embedded Software QA Engineer at Bang & Olufsen

Leading system verification, test strategy, and software maturity for next-generation luxury audio products. Domain expert using an advanced background in Engineering Acoustics (MSc, DTU) and Sound & Music Computing (MSc, AAU) to oversee embedded systems, DSP-driven audio processing, and Bluetooth/BLE streaming. Responsible for end-to-end validation, from high-resolution formats like Dolby Atmos to mobile connectivity, to ensure world-class acoustic performance and seamless user experience.

Sarabeth Mullins Senior Simulation Specialist

Working at the intersection of architectural acoustics, simulation, and cultural heritage, Sarabeth is a Simulation Specialist at Treble Technologies, developing and applying physics-based acoustic simulation tools for research, product development, and synthetic audio generation. 

Her background combines acoustics and music. She holds a PhD focused on the acoustics of cultural heritage spaces, with doctoral research connected to the reconstruction of Notre-Dame de Paris, exploring how sound shapes our experience of historic architecture. Alongside her industry work, she continues independent research in acoustic heritage and the study of sound, space, and listening in historical environments. Her earlier experience in acoustic consulting and live sound continues to inform a practical approach to simulation and analysis.

Dorte Hammershøi Professor at Aalborg University

Dorte Hammershøi is part of the Acoustics and Hearing research group in the Section for AI and Sound at the Department of Electronic Systems. The group explores how sound is generated, measured and perceived, and how technology can improve sound quality and hearing. Her research is focused on thrre main areas:

  • Natural sound in virtual environments
  • Prevention of hearing damage
  • Improving treatment and rehabilitation for hearing loss

Dorte is a recognised international award winning researcher for her significant contribution to audio engineering.

Prithvi Kantan Postdoctoral Researcher at Aalborg University

A researcher and educator passionate about empowering individuals – students overcoming academic challenges and patients with movement disorders – through interactive technologies and pedagogical methods. I hold a PhD from Aalborg University, where I developed real-time auditory feedback systems translating movement into sound for rehabilitation. My broader interests include sonic interaction design, multimodal systems, and human-centered technologies.

Alongside research, I teach and supervise at bachelor’s and master’s levels, focusing on personalized guidance and structured, inspiring learning experiences.

Nick Dunkerley Founder & CEO at Hindenburg systems – Tools for Audio Storytellers

Nick Dunkerley is the co-founder and CEO of Hindenburg Systems and a lifelong advocate for audio storytelling. He began his career as a radio host, sound engineer, and producer at Danish National Radio (DR), where he learned that the way a story is told is inseparable from the truth it carries.

Frustrated by technology getting in the way of that responsibility, he co-founded Hindenburg to support those who take storytelling seriously, journalists, producers, and documentarians working to make sense of the world.

He is a frequent speaker and lecturer, known for his perspective that technology should never replace judgment – but support it.

Pedro Costa Founder at Auricle

Born with around 50% hearing, Pedro Costa grew up with a deep passion for music and sound. As an acoustics engineer and musician, his own experience with hearing loss led him to rethink personal audio and explore cartilage conduction – a “third hearing pathway” that transmits sound through the ear cartilage while keeping the ear canal open.

In 2018, he founded Auricle in Copenhagen with the ambition to create open-ear audio that combines high-quality sound, comfort and awareness of the surrounding environment. After nearly seven years of development with a small team, Auricle launched awareONE, open-ear cartilage-conduction headphones delivering audio and haptic sensation through the tragus without blocking the ears.

Today, Costa is focused on meaningful audio innovation and technology that can serve people with different hearing profiles, while building a company culture where talented people can do their best work.

Immersive Experiences

From artistic performance to human perception

Few topics in sound have been discussed — and debated — more than immersive audio. And few areas come with as many terms and interpretations all trying to capture the same idea: a sound experience that surrounds, involves, and moves us.

In this panel, we dive into what it really means to be immersed and enveloped in sound. How can sound communicate through space — not just time — and how does that shape our perception of reality when we step out into the world?

We’ve gathered a group of pioneers in the field to explore these questions, share insights, and perhaps challenge a few assumptions.

This breakout session will take place in the Conservatory’s “New Hall”, equipped with a full Dynaudio immersive speaker system. A unique facility designed for students and researchers to experiment, be creative, and push the boundaries of immersive sound.

We can’t wait for you to step into the room, feel the sound, and hear about new research projects and use for applications like hearables and hearing aids, that are set to elevate our perception of sound in the very near future. Signals in Conversation: Multimodal Speech and Gaze Dynamics in Polyadic Turn-Taking

Conversations are inherently multimodal: participants coordinate not only through speech, but also via gaze, timing, and subtle behavioral cues. This talk presents data-driven insights from natural four-person conversations recorded with synchronized speech, gaze, and motion tracking in both quiet and noisy conditions,  focusing on how these signals can predict turn-taking outcomes, including who speaks when, how turns are yielded or retained, and whether overlaps occur.  

The findings illustrate how gaze and speech jointly support smooth interaction in co-present communication and point to opportunities for future technologies, including conversational agents, hearing aids, and communication technologies, to better align with the realities of natural group dynamics. 

A Machine Learning-based Surrogate Model for Sund Field Prediction Based on Plane Wave Superposition

Scientific machine learning has recently emerged as a promising alternative to traditional numerical solvers for sound field estimation in enclosed spaces. While physical models can be naturally incorporated into the learning framework, they often incur high computational costs due to the large number of internal evaluation points and the repeated use of automatic differentiation. To address this, we propose a novel architecture that produces outputs inherently satisfying the underlying physical constraints. This allows the neural network to focus solely on enforcing surface impedance boundary conditions and/or available measurement data, resulting in significantly faster convergence and improved accuracy. A benchmark test shows that the method matches the performance of state-of-the-art room acoustics simulations, with particular advantages in the mid- to high-frequency range.

Audio ML Workflow With Treble SDK

Machine learning in audio relies heavily on high-quality datasets and robust evaluation frameworks, yet acquiring and curating real-world data remains costly, time-consuming, and often incomplete. The Treble SDK provides a breakthrough solution by enabling large-scale generation of physically accurate synthetic audio data, virtual prototyping, and automated evaluation workflows.

Built on Treble’s proprietary cloud-based acoustic simulation engine, the SDK allows researchers and practitioners to programmatically create realistic acoustic environments, generate device specific and spatial room impulse responses, and evaluate audio algorithms under diverse and complex conditions. This opens new possibilities for advancing applications such as speech enhancement, source localization, dereverberation, and adaptive audio.
In this workshop, participants will explore how the Treble SDK integrates into modern machine learning pipelines, from dataset generation to model validation. Through demonstrations and examples, we will showcase how accelerated, scalable simulations can reduce development cycles, expand coverage of edge cases, and improve algorithm performance across domains including audio AI, AR/VR, and automotive acoustics.

Carsten Olesen – President, HARMAN Consumer Audio

Carsten Olesen is a valued public speaker for Industry specific events with an extensive knowledge of the Consumer Audio market. He is based at the HARMAN EMEA Headquarters located in Amsterdam, in The Netherlands, and holds both engineering and business administration degrees.

 

Carsten Olesen started his career with HARMAN in 1999. He started as a Brand Director for HARMAN International, then moved to the Sales organization, where he was responsible for Commercial Strategy, Execution of Business Plan, Strategic Account Development, and Commercial and Distribution Policy.

In January 2009 he became the Commercial Director for HARMAN International in the EMEA Region. In 2012 he moved to the position of GM & VP of the EMEA Region. Under his leadership, the EMEA organization has undergone massive growth, as has the Consumer Audio Market.  

In June, 2019, Mr. Olesen was promoted to the position of President of the Consumer Audio Division. In this role, Carsten leads Global Consumer Audio business including the Engineering and Design functions. In 2020, he won the prestigious International TCG Leadership Award from the Grand Jury, comprised of the top executives of the leading tech retailers across Europe.

Bridging product data and perception

FORCE Technology is now launching “EAR”, an online platform designed for consultants, manufacturers, and the general public. EAR stands for Environmental Acoustics & Reverberation, and the site currently features tools for evaluating product characteristics using auralization, a room acoustics estimation calculator based on EN ISO 12354-6, and more.

In this demo, you’ll be guided through the different parts of the platform, which range from tools suitable for laypeople to advanced users. We’ll also briefly touch on the motivation behind the project and explain how you can gain access to a trial license.

Machine Learning in Acoustics

Peter Gerstoft is a Danish-American scientist and engineer specializing in ocean acoustics, seismology, and signal processing. He is a Distinguished Data Scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego and an adjunct professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UC San Diego and DTU, Copenhagen.

Gerstoft began his career in acoustics and vibrations at Odegaard & Danneskiold-Samsøe (1987–1992). He then served as a Senior Scientist at the NATO SACLANT Undersea Research Centre in La Spezia, Italy, from 1992 to 1997. Between 1999 and 2000, Gerstoft worked as a Senior Seismic Acoustic Officer with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization. He has been a Data Scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography since 1997.

Since 2013, he has held an adjunct faculty position in Electrical and Computer Engineering at UC San Diego, where he teaches courses on seismology, data assimilation, and machine learning for physical systems.
