Expanding Creativity With Audio Description

SOUND DISCOVERY: A forum for sound exploration

A new EU regulatory requirement is expected to mandate audio description for all film productions. However, producing audio description is currently costly, time-consuming, and complex—posing a significant challenge for broadcasters.

That’s why we’re coming together to explore creative potential, foster mutual understanding across the industry, and identify effective, innovative solutions.

Through insights into the full production workflow – and cross-disciplinary conversations and networking – we aim to build a clearer overview of every link in the film production chain and hope to ignite new collaborations and business optimization across the film and TV industry.

Join us in moving accessibility forward!

Accessibility

What Is Audio Description?

By Nick Dunkerley

“A bright red Ford Mustang roars by, with the hero at the wheel.”

That’s audio description.

For those who haven’t come across it before, audio description is an accessibility track designed for people who are visually impaired. It describes what’s happening in a scene, opening up films, series, and other media so everyone can fully experience the story.

Until now, adding audio description has often been voluntary. Fortunately, it is becoming mandatory in many contexts.

That’s good news.

But it also brings new challenges. Not just how to do it well, but how to do it economically. No extra budgets are being added to productions, so how do we make this a positive step forward for everyone involved?

Right now, media professionals are coming together to tackle exactly that.

Because accessibility isn’t just a requirement, it’s an opportunity to make better stories for everyone.

Nick Dunkerley Founder and CEO at Hindenburg Systems

Nick Dunkerley is the co-founder and CEO of Hindenburg Systems and a lifelong advocate for audio storytelling. He began his career as a radio host, sound engineer, and producer at Danish National Radio (DR), where he learned that the way a story is told is inseparable from the truth it carries.

Frustrated by technology getting in the way of that responsibility, he co-founded Hindenburg to support those who take storytelling seriously, journalists, producers, and documentarians working to make sense of the world.

He is a frequent speaker and lecturer, known for his perspective that technology should never replace judgment – but support it

The seminar will be co-hosted by Jeppe Lindegaard, Danish Sound Cluster.
