Measurement of scattering coefficient of building materials

Project title:

Measurement of scattering coefficient of building materials

Description:

Adjusting the room acoustics depends on the purpose of the room, the sound source and materials inside the rooms. The materials effect is dependent on the amount, the position, the absorptive and scattering properties of the materials. Absorption properties is generally available for materials used for adjusting the sound inside the room, but the scattering properties is rarely available and therefore is a substantial (for some materials) part of the effect in the room not taking into consideration.

This project is establishing a measurement setup to be able to perform measurements of random incidence scattering coefficient according to ISO 17497-1 “Acoustics — Sound-scattering properties of surfaces

Part 1: Measurement of the random incidence scattering coefficient in a reverberation room”.

The measurements are performed inside a reverberation room, where material samples are mounted at a turn table. The diameter of the samples is 3 m, and a test setup for mounting the samples on a turntable needed.

According to the measurement standard, the standard will not produce reliable results for samples with a high absorption coefficient. This aspect might be a part of the project if the partner products have higher sound absorption than recommended.

The project is divided into three parts:

Part 1: Establishing and testing a test setup for performing measurements according to ISO 17497-1.

Part 2: Performing measurements of scattering coefficients on products

Part 3: Reporting of measurements

Project partner contribution:
