Beyond DSP, Part II: an Ear Computer that runs audio apps directly in the listeners ears

25 October 2022 @ 15.00 - 16.30

In this series of webinars we will explore fresh new approaches that are available for audio experts today to develop their DSP differently. Part II explores a new approach in how algorithms are implemented in headphones, with a vision that “Our headphones will contain apps and will be driven using software features that will unlock a new wave of innovation“. Focused on extreme personalisation and an app approach within audio technology, having a well established multi– hardware Operative System approach in headphones could help developers and users open the doors of endless sonic possibilities

Digital Signal Processing has been one of the most important and used tools for many years to process and shape the digital sounds that we listen to in our everyday lives. With the rise of new technologies and architectures over the last few years, we are witnessing interesting new approaches of implementing DSP with unlikely new elements, that provide possibilities for new development opportunities. This series of webinars explores some of these new approaches and explains why and how they can be relevant, and potentially revolutionary, for audio product development of today, and of the future.

In this webinar our guests educate us about a new approach to DSP by re-thinking and re-designing how DSP should be implemented in headphone development, by having a multi- hardware Operative System and an “App store” approach.

Gary is a technology and product strategy expert, with a long and remarkable career in the audio industry, where he led companies in the music, professional audio, consumer electronics, and mobile segments. He has worked directly with most of the world’s leading audio product brands for more than two decades defining, designing, building and shipping products on a large scale. Before Sonical, Gary led his own audio consultancy business in SF Bay Area; and even before that, Gary worked with large corporations like Knowles, Dolby, CSR (before Qualcomm), CEDAR Audio, and others piling up multiple patents in the process.

Gary Spittle, Founder & CEO @ Sonical Inc.

Adriaan is highly experienced across the entire engineering stack, from electronic hardware through assembler; from C to high-level languages like Javascript. He is also an accomplished Software Architect, with a deep passion for efficient code patterns. He has extensive experience designing, building and maintaining custom systems across the whole range of stack types, from Cloud to Embedded. Adriaan is passionate about building teams of highly creative innovator-engineers who have a drive to think laterally, and loves the challenge of figuring out how to maximise their potential to enable rapid innovation.

Adriaan Pelzer, CTO @ IDUN audio

After completing a PhD in psychoacoustics in Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, Culann worked in Windmill Lane Recording Studios, with some of the biggest bands in the world, designing creative/productivity tools for day-to-day activities.

He then built and ran a number of hybrid Studio/R&D businesses, combining real-world, real time learning from commercial recording activities with technology development and consultancy to develop useful tools for ever-changing customer needs.

Culann has worked with audio/music throughout his career and Segotia is a return to roots: that 3D spatial psychoacoustics PhD from years ago now gets used in ways that he never imagined… and the best is yet to come!
