Low Complexity Communication Codecs – LC3 and LC3plus

The LC3 and LC3plus audio codecs were developed in order to solve essential shortcomings present in today’s wireless communication platforms such as Bluetooth and Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT). The codecs’ operation modes range from medium bit rates for optimal voice transmission up to high bit rates for high-resolution music streaming services (the latter applies to LC3plus). At the same time, the codecs operate at low latency, low computational complexity and low memory footprint.

Alfonso will take us through the following:

  • An introduction to the LC3 product family
  • The standardization and technical benefits
  • Software licensing
  • Patent licensing
Alexander will join the discussion to answer any technical questions.
Alfonso has a doctorate in electrical engineering by Friedrich-Alexander University (Erlangen-Nuremberg), and Executive MBA by Instituto de Empresa (Madrid).
He works in strategy, business development, key account management and licensing for Fraunhofer IIS – Audio & Multimedia Technologies.
As part of this work, I have been leading the LC3 and LC3plus strategy, business development and licensing for the past 3 years.

Dr Alfonso Carrera,

Alexander Tschekalinskij is a senior software and testing engineer in the Low Delay Audio Coding Group at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS) in Erlangen, Germany. He holds a Master of Science degree in Nuclear Physics from the Friedrich-Alexander-University. As part of the team that developed the LC3 audio codec which is standardized in Bluetooth and the LC3plus codec which is standardized in ETSI, Alexander represents the Fraunhofer IIS as the Bluetooth SIG delegate. Further responsibilities within the group include software quality assurance and the maintenance of the LC3 specification.
